Geography of Greece


Greece is located in the southeastern part of Europe, in the southern part of the Balkan Peninsula. It has extensive coastline and islands in the Aegean, Ionian and Mideterranean sea. Greece is located in a strategic place at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa. It shares borders with Bulgaria and Macedonia to ther north, Albania to the northwest and Turkey to the northeast.

 

80% of Greece consists of mountains and hills, making it one of the most mountainous countries in Europe. Mount Olympus, the mythical abode of the Greek Gods, is the second highest mountain peak in Europe, with its 2 917 meters.

Greece has the longest coastline in all of Europe due to its highly indented coastline and numerous islands.

Greece features over 2 000 islands, a little over 200 of which are inhabitaed. Crete is the largest island.
